Aralee Louise

Me: (screaming excited nonsense)

Pai: WHAT! What is it!

Me: Laurel is in LABOR!!!

Hank: Is she ok?

Pai: Labor means that Laurel is having her baby.

Hank: Really?

Me: We need to light a candle! (getting up)

Hank: (following me) Mama, why do you always light candles for babies?  You had a candle for Sam’s sister and that baby in California.  Is it because it will be the baby’s birthday?

Me: Good Idea there, buddy.  I light candles when I want to honor someone. Some people pray, some people sing, some people take offerings to temples, light incense… I light candles and send all of my love to that person.  I fill my heart with happiness and let the light carry it across the sea. (striking a match)

Hank: Like when we go to a church?  You always let me put coins in the box and light candles.  I think of who is in my heart.

Me: Exactly.

Hank: Can we have cake when the baby comes, because it is a birthday?

Pai: Excellent idea!

Hank: Chocolate cake?

Me: (staring at instant message) SHE IS IN THE WATERTUB!!!

Pai: (whispering) Love now, cake later.

Dinner Theater

Hank: Look!  I am eating tomatoes without care!

Me: (giggling) How very Edwardian of you.

Hank: What?

Me: Nothing, I am happy you are eating tomatoes. They are a part of the sauce and if you like the sauce you certainly like tomatoes.

Hank: Yes, because it is so good!

Me: You are my spag bog (spaghetti bolognese) monster.

Hank: Yup!  I have plenty of brains, plenty of courage, and plenty of heart which helps me do a lot of things!

Me: True, shall we go see The Wizard in the Emerald City, you and I?

Hank: (mouth full) We can’t. (chewing) He doesn’t exists.

Me: Um, excuse me? (eyebrow raised)

Hank: (thinking, whispering) Do you mean in our imagination?

Me: (whispering back) Claro (of course).

Hank: Yes!  We can skip, get a basket and sing like in the movie.  We can design our own Emmeralas City with smoke and giant heads, pretty ladies, a big ball of fire, Monsters and then we need to make the wizard everywhere like when they got back from melting the witch: he was everywhere.

Me: (singing) We’re off to see the wizard. The wonderful wizard of Oz. We hear he is a wiz of a wiz if ever a wiz there was….

Hank: Min ewer o ewer a WIZ there was a Wizard of Oz is one Because!

Together: Because, BEcause, BECAUse, BECAUSE! (jazz hands)

Pai: (entering the room) Have I walked into a musical or dinner?

Together: Because of the wonderful things he does!

Pai: Is this dinner theater?

Together: We’re off to see the Wizard!  The Wonderful Wizard of OZ! (big finish)

Pai: (salva de palmas, applause)

Reading is My Superpower

Hank: Done!  Finished!

Me: (coming into the room) Finished with what?

Hank: My homework, see?  Papa gave me some of you fancy paper because I forgot my caderno (notebook) at school.  I wrote these three frases (phrases) and I drew these pictures.  Do you want me to read it to you?

Me: I would be delighted!

Hank: A Mimi deu uma nota á Natalia.  That means that Mimi gave Natalia a paper euro…  Um, like a dollar.  O Nuno deu uma moeda á Mimi.  That means that Nuno gave, uma moeda, a coin to Mimi.  A mota do pai.  That means My pai has a mota.

Me: A motorcycle.

Hank: Yes! Can you help me draw a moeda (coin)?

Me: Certainly.  You did an excellent job on your homework.

Hank: I did it all by myself.

Me: You are really beginning to understand the puzzle of reading.  I am so excited for you. Soon you will be a Time Lord.

Hank: What?

Me: Or a King.

Hank: Mama!

Me: Or a famous scientist discovering a new vaccine, or an artist painting a masterpiece, or a lion, or a mouse, or a wizard or a friend…

Hank: Mama?

Me: When you read books you are all of those things.

Hank: OH! That is true.  You love to read.

Me: Reading is my superpower.

Hank: (laughing) You’re funny.  I thought art was your superpower?

Me: BOTH! I am pretty powerful.  All Mamas are! Ok, to draw a moeda (coin) you begin with a circle…
