(climbing into the car)
Me: Hey, babe. What’s up? Why the shanghai?
Pai: (ready to depart) Are we buckled?
Me: Why are you picking us up from school? We could have walked home by now.
Pai: If you did then you’d miss the surprise!
Me: What surprise?
Pai: You’ll see.
Me: Are we going to get Molly?
Hank: I bet it is a Halloween surprise!
Pai: Stop right there, both of you! Adriana (Molly’s Nanny) has been working very hard on this surprise all week and you will not ruin it with guessing.
Hank: I love Amália’s Ama (Nanny). She is the nicest.
Me: We are so very lucky to find Molly’s best person. It was hard to ask for help. I wouldn’t have handed Molly over to anyone else. Adriana blesses our lives.
Hank: If my fifth grade is the school down the street from her house after school I will walk to her house every day and I will help her with the girls and I will help her clean and I will be so happy there while waiting for you or papa or can I bring Molly home myself?
Me: Um… It’s far. It’s the opposite side of town. If she lived as close as your school then sure, but Adriana’s house is a bit too far for Molly’s little legs, not to mention all the distractions of old town. It would take you hours to get home.
Hank: You’re right. Molly would stop at every fountain and all the steps she would hop and she’d ask for a cookie at every café!
Me: When she is four, maybe, but by then she will be in infantário (preschool) at your school.
Pai: (parking) Give me your phone, Joy. I want you to enjoy this.
Me: I can already tell this is going to cure my unending Halloween Homesickness.
Pai: It will. Adriana is so creative. Now, no more guessing! Lets go!
